BILL PROUD PHOTOGRAPHY

Monument Valley Mittens

Being at the right place at the right time is always serendipitous for a landscape photographer. As I was driving in the pouring rain toward Navajo National Monument for a requested photo, conditions looked bad. As I neared Kayenta I made a quick decision to turn and head for Monument Valley for the evening. At the Mittens overlook, and in still dreary weather I could see a small cloud break near the horizon, so I set up the camera and hoped. Fifteen minutes before sunset the sun appeared through the clouds and I made this image. The rain had knocked down the dust and the setting sun bounced off the low-lying clouds resulting in a clear atmosphere and the deep red mittens color. Right place, right time and the right conditions; I hope it speaks to you as much as it does to me. This print is on Fuji Crystal Archive paper and was made with a Cambo 45 Super Field camera on Fuji Velvia film. The print won a first place, color print award from the Fort Lewis College 2003 Photo exhibit and is Crow Canyon Archaeological Center’s 2004 catalogue cover. It has also been selected by Impact Photo Graphics for use as a post card, which is displayed at Goulding’s Trading Post.
