BILL PROUD PHOTOGRAPHY

Monument Valley Teardrop Silhouette

This landmark is so universally known, originally made popular by David Muench that I avoided going there for many years. One summer afternoon with great clouds overhead I decided it was time and with my Navajo guide we drove up to the site. It is a short hike and although I have seen many photographic renditions of this location, nothing equals seeing it in person.

This particular image was made in late summer where the possibility of a few afternoon clouds can add to the drama. I photographed it from a wider perspective than what I’ve seen to offer something slightly different and also made one in shade to give a silhouetted look.

Both images were photographed with a Cambo 4x5 SF monorail on Fuji Velvia 100 film. Prints are Fuji Crystal Archive paper.
