Brown Pelican in Flight
I photographed this Pelican on my first trip to Florida in 1993. I had recently purchased a Canon A2e and a 300mm F/2.8L lens and was anxious to try out their eye controlled, predictive focus system. On this trip I was in Bradenton, Florida and working the islands around that area. I found this little island at the south end of Longboat Key where the Herons were roosting and which had a small boat launch for the local fishermen.
The people fishing would return in the afternoon and some would clean their catch near the launch. Of course the Pelicans, squawking and fighting with each other, would dive for and otherwise fight for the entrails, entertaining me, as well as everyone else within hearing range. During the lulls in action, they would circle this small island, flying directly past me. With the camera on a tripod and using a ballhead for tracking, I made this image.
