Equipment

I primarily photograph landscapes in 4x5 format these days and currently use a Cambo 45 SF, (Super Field) monorail view camera. My lenses include three Schneiders, a 75mm f/5.6 Super-Angulon, a 120mm f/5.6 Super-Symmar HM and a 180mm f/5.6 Angulon. I also have added the Fujinon 300 f/8.0 T to my mix. I like the monorail for its generous movement capabilities but it doesn’t pack as well as a field camera. I carry the camera in an Eagle Creek pack set up and ready to pull from the front-loading compartment.

I use Canon gear for the birds and wildlife. I use the EOS 3 bodies and the 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom or 500 f/4.5L for most of the images on the site. I’ll be switching to digital in the near future and will stay with the Canon system, moving up to the IS equipment.

I still use an older EOS A2e for my meter, particularly liking the matrix metering system for most applications. In special situations, white birds and snow, I’ll spot meter and adjust or use a gray card for a reading and adjust. This metering technique allows me to also use the smaller camera to find scenes before setting up the more complex 4x5 system.

I use a Gitzo metal tripod with a Kirk ballhead and quick-release plates. Set up is fast and easy and the Cambo has built-in bubbles for quick leveling. Focusing is done with a Fuji 4X loupe.

I’m using less and less filtration. I use a polarizer and split-neutral density filters but don’t use 81A, warming filters any more.

I shoot Fuji Velvia Quikload 100 film exclusively.
